Spend a glorious day walking above the rooftops of Lugano, where every turn reveals a new angle on the lake, the mountains, and the elegant cityscape far below. A funicular ride to Monte Bre sets the stage: from there, a circular walk climbs to Monte Boglia through fragrant beech woods and across sun-warmed ridges, with the iconic silhouette of Monte San Salvatore, Switzerland's "Sugarloaf Mountain," as a constant companion on the horizon. Along the way, a picturesque artists' village and panoramic restaurant terraces make this a day to remember.
Itinerary: Monte Bre - Monte Boglia (5h, see map)
From Lugano-Cassarate, the funicular glides up to Monte Bre, one of the sunniest spots in all of Switzerland. The summit offers a spectacular panorama over the Lugano Bay, the Alps, and the distant Monte Rosa massif. A leisurely 15-to-20-minute descent brings you to the charming village of Bre, once home to farmers and now a sought-after residence and holiday retreat, beloved by artists and cultural figures who have left their creative mark on its narrow lanes.
From the village, head north along the road to the basin of Pontivo. Here the ascent begins on a comfortable, well-signposted trail. Roughly 30 minutes through cool, dappled beech woods brings you to the area of Carbonera at 1,033 metres, where a refreshing fountain awaits before the final push to Monte Boglia. From the summit at 1,129 metres, a magnificent panorama sweeps across the Lugano bay, with the soft green hills of nearby Italy fading into the distance.
Follow the ridge as it descends toward Alpe Bolla, then loop back to the village of Bre. Reward yourself with a stop at the Osteria della Funicolare or the Ristorante Vetta, both equipped with sun-kissed terraces and sweeping views, the perfect place to savour one last lingering look at the landscape before riding the funicular back down to Lugano-Cassarate.
This itinerary from the village of Bre to Monte Boglia forms the first stage of "Lugano Trekking," a captivating three-day walk from Bre to Tesserete that explores the mountains ringing the lake.
