Bathed in golden light for more hours than anywhere else in Switzerland, the slopes of Monte Bre above Lugano live up to their sun-blessed reputation. At 933 metres, the summit offers a luminous panorama stretching across the Alps and the distant Monte Rosa, softening into the graceful curve of the Lugano Bay with Monte San Salvatore presiding on the opposite shore. A funicular from Lugano-Cassarate glides you to the top in about twenty minutes, and from there a short walk leads to the enchanting village of Bre -- a place where art and mountain life have intertwined for generations. The departure station is connected to Lugano's city centre by public bus.

Along the way, the funicular passes through the villages of Suvigliana, Albonago, Aldesago, and Bre, each one a sought-after residential enclave prized for its privileged perch above the lake and its generous share of Ticino's famous sunshine.

Itinerary: From the Mount to the Village (2h, see map)

At the summit, beyond the breathtaking panorama, a small church and two restaurants -- Osteria della Funicolare and Ristorante Vetta -- welcome visitors with terraces that seem to float above the landscape. A short walk of about 20 minutes, descending by trail and stairway, brings you to the heart of Bre at 785 metres.

Once a humble farming village, Bre has drawn artists and creative spirits for well over a century. Among those who called it home were local painters Pasquale Gilardi, known as "Lelen," and Luigi Taddei, along with Swiss artist Wilhelm Schmid (1892-1971) and Hungarian painter Josef Biro (1887-1975). In the house where Schmid once lived, a museum showcases the work of this important figure in the "Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity) movement that arose in Germany in the 1920s. Biro's distinctive vision can be admired along the village's "Via Crucis" and in his contemporary frescoes inside the parish church, while outside the church a Luigi Taddei painting of San Cristoforo graces the facade.

The artistic spirit pervades Bre to this day. Some twenty works by contemporary artists -- including Aligi Sassu, Armando Losa, Gianfredo Camesi, Emilio Rissone, Mariapia Borgnini, and Fra Roberto Pasotti -- are woven into the fabric of the village itself, set between intimate little squares and paved stone alleyways. A stroll through Bre feels less like visiting a gallery and more like discovering that art has simply taken up permanent residence among the old stones.
