Where Lake Lugano curves gently between the towns of Lugano and Ponte Tresa, a lush green hill rises from the water like a botanical treasure chest. Monte Caslano packs an astonishing diversity of plant life onto its 500-metre-high slopes: some 600 species of plants and 150 types of mosses, all thriving in a microclimate of mild winters, sunny summers, and generous spring and autumn rain. Protected by the Swiss Confederation for its ecological significance, this compact peninsula also holds geological surprises, with rock formations spanning vastly different eras. A two-hour loop around the mountain makes for a fascinating, easy walk.

Caslano is reachable by car or by boat from Lugano. The trail follows a well-marked path enriched by approximately fifteen information panels that illuminate the natural wonders around every bend. Along the way you will encounter lindens, elms, ash trees, black locusts, cherry trees, chestnut trees, maples, and an abundance of shrubs including hazel and thorn trees. On Monte Caslano, also known as Sassalto, the special position at the southern edge of the Alps and the favourable climate create conditions for an extraordinarily varied flora, where trees, bushes, and underbrush coexist in intimate proximity, with even a few exotic species joining the mix.
The itinerary follows the perimeter of the mountain, with the lake never far from view and the gentle lapping of water a constant soundtrack. For safety, stay on the marked trail throughout. Wine lovers will want to pause at the restaurant Sassalto on the hill, which offers an inviting selection of Ticino wines and a terrace overlooking the lake, the perfect reward after a leisurely circumnavigation.
