Welcome to the Alprose Chocolate Experience in Caslano, the most visited museum in Ticino, drawing some 70,000 visitors each year into a world where cocoa history, live production and irresistible tastings converge into one deliciously immersive journey.
Recognisable from afar by its bright red, life-sized cow silhouettes, the museum has been captivating chocolate lovers of all ages since its founding in 1991. Inside, you will trace the extraordinary story of chocolate -- from the first rudimentary cocoa-based drinks prepared by the ancient peoples of Central America to the sophisticated confections of today -- through vivid displays, engaging anecdotes and, of course, generous samples that make it nearly impossible not to turn your visit into a hands-on tasting adventure.
One of the museum's highlights is an elevated corridor that places you directly above the production floor. From this vantage point, you can follow every step of the chocolate-making process: cocoa beans being cleaned and roasted, flowing rivers of liquid chocolate moving through their various stages, and finished products being wrapped and packaged -- all part of the operation that sees Alprose export more than 5,000 tonnes of chocolate annually across the globe.
Large photographic panels and informative displays round out the experience, recounting how the cocoa bean was first treasured by the Maya and the Aztecs, and how it eventually conquered the palate of an entire nation. Switzerland's love affair with chocolate began in earnest around 1891 and has never waned: the country boasts the highest per capita consumption in the world and remains one of the largest global producers. In 2019 alone, the 17 biggest Swiss manufacturers produced over 200,000 tonnes, roughly 74 per cent of which was sold abroad.
