Perched on a wooded hilltop in the Mendrisio district, the archaeological park of Tremona-Castello offers exactly this remarkable experience -- a walk through six millennia of history where the past materialises before your eyes.
A Six Thousand-Year Journey into the Past
The hill's appeal to its earliest inhabitants was not merely aesthetic. Its commanding position afforded sweeping control over the communication routes linking Como and Varese to Riva San Vitale, Monte Ceneri and the central Alps, making it a prized strategic outpost. People settled here from the dark ages onward, building a fortified, labyrinthine community that sheltered them through Barbarian invasions and the bitter skirmishes between Como and Milan.
Then, sometime in the 14th century, the village was abruptly abandoned. The reason remains a mystery -- historians suspect a sudden military attack -- and the forest slowly swallowed what was left. Centuries passed in silence until 1988, when Ticino archaeologist Alfio Martinelli rediscovered the site, launching excavations that would reveal a settlement far more sophisticated than a simple rural hamlet.
The artefacts tell a vivid story: these were artisans and farmers who travelled widely, traded their goods across the region, used money freely, and adorned themselves with beautifully handcrafted ornamental pieces. Season after season, each new excavation enriches the picture with intimate details of daily life during the Middle Ages, the era of Tremona-Castello's greatest splendour. The archaeological site is accessible only on foot, via a pleasant 10-minute walk along the trail that begins in Tremona (via al Castello).
