There is a moment, just before you leave the aircraft, when the entire southern Alps unfurl beneath you like a living map, lakes glinting silver, green valleys fanning outward, snow-capped peaks piercing the horizon. Then you jump, and for one breathless, exhilarating minute the wind roars against your face and the world rushes upward in a blur of pure sensation. Skydiving over Ticino is that rare experience that feels simultaneously like a thrill and a miracle, a sensation that should be lived at least once in a lifetime.
Taking off aboard a Pilatus Porter airplane from the Para Centro at Locarno airport, you climb to an altitude of 4,000 metres with a panorama that stretches for hundreds of kilometres in every direction. For a fleeting moment you feel like an eagle soaring over the natural wonders of the southern Alpine region: the majestic Monte Rosa and Bernina standing like distant sentinels, and on the clearest days, the spires of Milan's cathedral shimmering on the horizon. The Para Centro Locarno organises parachute flights year-round, and during the summer months, tandem jumps with an experienced instructor are offered three times daily at 9am, 1pm and 4pm.
After a quick physical assessment and a brief theory lesson accompanied by a video, you receive your gear, and the adventure begins. The Pilatus Porter climbs for about twenty minutes, the temperature dropping some 30 degrees Celsius from ground level as you reach jump altitude. Then the door opens, and you leap into a free dive with your heart in your throat and a rush of immense freedom flooding every sense. A full minute of freefall, wind screaming, the landscape spinning gloriously below, before the parachute blooms open above you and the world goes quiet. The gentle descent back to the departure point takes about 10 minutes, a peaceful glide through the sky with the Alps cradling you on every side.
