Plunge into crystal-clear pools, rappel down moss-covered waterfalls and slide through sculpted granite gorges where the only sounds are rushing water and your own exhilarated laughter. Ticino is widely recognised by experts as one of the finest canyoning destinations in the world, and it is easy to see why: tempestuous rivers and streams carve their way through the wilderness of Centovalli, Vallemaggia, Verzasca, Blenio and the Riviera, creating a natural playground of breathtaking beauty. All you need is a good dose of courage, a love of adventure and the desire to spend a few thrilling hours fully immersed in the elements. Suited up head to toe in neoprene and guided by experienced professionals, the fun is guaranteed. Safety and professionalism are assured at Swiss level by regular SGS expert inspections.
Ticino is a canyoning paradise thanks to its countless waterfalls, torrents and rivers that rush through untamed valleys. No special skills are needed, just a passion for the thrill, a love of water and respect for nature. If that describes you, then prepare for descents lasting from half a day to a full day. All equipment is provided by the organisers; simply bring a swimsuit and a towel. Once kitted out, the adventure begins: scrambling over wet rock, sliding down natural chutes and leaping into turquoise pools, with professional guides at your side every step of the way.
Locations and canyons to choose from include Lodrino, Iragna and Cresciano in the Riviera; Pontirone and Malvaglia in the Blenio Valley; Giornico in the Leventina Valley; and Corippo, Gordevio and Bignasco in the region around Locarno.
The minimum age varies from 10 to 12 years depending on the canyon. Besides being able to swim, good physical condition is essential. Those opting for more challenging courses should also have some basic climbing skills.
Excursions run from May through October and usually take place even in the rain. However, lightning alerts, particularly agitated waters or river flooding after heavy storms may lead to cancellations.
Important: canyoning is a deeply exhilarating activity, but it demands respect. It should only be practised with proper equipment and under the supervision of qualified professionals, regularly certified by SGS experts.
