Imagine floating in warm salt water with Lake Maggiore stretching out before you and a crown of mountains framing the horizon. At Termali Salini & Spa, adjacent to the Lido of Locarno, this is not a daydream but an everyday reality. This elegant wellness centre offers 400 square metres of indoor and outdoor salt-water pools, saunas, a Turkish bath, serene rest areas, and a full range of massages and treatments -- all designed to dissolve the tension of daily life. From nearly every vantage point, the lake glimmers in the background, and when you slip into the large heated outdoor pool, the sensation of swimming directly in Lake Maggiore is utterly convincing. Between bathing rituals, the on-site bistro serves delicate refreshments and healthy snacks.
The centre's design draws its inspiration from the journey of water itself -- from mountain source through Ticino's valleys to the lake below. Architects Moro & Moro translated this natural narrative into an environment where gentle waterfalls cascade from the upper floor to the lower ground level, their soft sound lulling visitors in the same way that flowing rivers enchant hikers in the summer valleys. The building materials reinforce the connection to Ticino: local granite from the valleys and native timber -- beech, oak, and black locust -- lend warmth and authenticity to every surface.
Two distinctive saunas anchor the thermal experience. The first, Finnish in style and shaped like a horseshoe, offers a sweeping view of the lake and surrounding mountains through a wide panoramic window. The second plays with sophisticated mirrors that infinitely multiply the flickering candlelight surrounding you, creating an atmosphere of quiet enchantment. Dedicated sauna ceremonies are available to deepen the therapeutic benefits.
Two hammam areas provide further variety. The first, on the upper floor, is an intimate alcove with evolving lighting and carefully selected herbal aromas. The second, a textile-free zone on the lower level, is distinguished by a beautiful vaulted ceiling that evokes the grandeur of a historic bathhouse.
All pools use salt water and combine swimming lanes with seats, loungers, whirlpools, and an array of water jets -- including targeted cervical treatments designed to release deep-seated tension.
Relaxation spaces are thoughtfully distributed across every level of the centre: on the sun-kissed terrace, in areas of subdued, warm light, or directly in front of the large glass walls with uninterrupted lake views. The wellness area offers beauty massages -- with oils, if desired -- as well as soothing mud treatments.
For an especially private retreat, three penthouse suites are available, each featuring a double pool (indoor and outdoor), massage beds, and a private terrace overlooking the lake -- the ultimate indulgence for a solo escape or a shared moment of tranquillity.
Architecture
The building housing Termali Salini & Spa, designed by the studio of Moro & Moro, is a work of architectural distinction whose transparency reflects the surrounding landscape. "During the day," explains architect Franco Moro, "natural light produces alternating images, while at night the building becomes an evolving lantern, shifting with the intensity and colour of the artificial light." The structure takes its conceptual inspiration from a barge moored on the beach: the keel contains all technical systems and storage, while above it rests a transparent shell that, like a great aquarium, opens toward the lake landscape -- an oasis of peace suspended between water and sky.
