Where lake and mountain meet, Morcote unfolds like a postcard come to life. Crowned "the nicest village of Switzerland 2016," this luminous settlement on the banks of Lake Lugano -- affectionately known as the "pearl of the Ceresio" -- enchants visitors with its graceful arcaded centre, its sun-warmed churches and chapels, and a botanical park that feels like a small paradise. Once a fishermen's village, its houses still gaze out over the water, their porticos recalling the days when boats were sheltered beneath stone arches. Morcote was also home to gifted artisans and artists who made their fortunes abroad yet left indelible marks of their genius in their homeland.
The visit
A stroll along the lakeside promenade reveals the village's layered character: humble architectural forms stand alongside noble residences such as the Palazzo Paleari (Paleari Palace), its facade adorned with refined stucco work, and the Torre del Capitano (Tower of the Captain), which still preserves a mullioned window and faded traces of frescoes.
Beyond the centre and its narrow alleys, a long stairway of about 400 steps ascends toward the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso (Saint Mary of the Rock). The climb is an experience in itself -- past a beautiful fountain, intimate chapels, and a religious building dedicated to Sant'Antonio abate (Saint Anthony the Abbot), where a remarkable fresco depicts human souls caught in a net. At the summit, the complex formed by the church, the adjacent octagonal chapel, and the monumental cemetery commands a panoramic position of breathtaking beauty. The church, built in stages between 1470 and 1758 in Renaissance-Baroque style, harbours frescoes spanning centuries, a mesmerising illusionistic dome, and an organ dating from the 1600s. In the neighbouring Baroque chapel of Sant'Antonio da Padova (Saint Anthony of Padova), stuccoes and frescoes by local artists reward the attentive eye. The cemetery, terraced into a steep slope, holds tombstones and funerary chapels of genuine artistic value.
