Where Lugano's elegant lakefront meets the Alps, a bold architectural statement rises as the cultural beating heart of southern Switzerland. LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura is a modern cultural centre devoted to visual art, music and the performing arts, housing the MASI (Museum of Art of Italian Switzerland) across three exhibition floors of temporary shows and permanent collection displays, alongside a magnificent 1,000-seat concert hall. More than a museum, LAC is a living cultural crossroads connecting Northern and Southern Europe, and a vital point of reference for artistic life across Switzerland.

Set in a breathtaking position overlooking the lake, the complex welcomes visitors with a rich programme of exhibitions, concerts, theatre and dance performances, as well as an array of cultural initiatives and activities designed for young audiences and families alike.

The concert hall and auditorium, entirely sheathed in warm wood panelling and fitted with a modular acoustic shell, is engineered for sonic perfection and can accommodate up to 1,000 spectators. It serves as the principal venue for the seasons of LuganoInScena and LuganoMusica and regularly hosts performances by the Compagnia Finzi Pasca and the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana. The Radiotelevisione svizzera, Switzerland's Italian-language public broadcaster, also stages several of its seasonal concerts here.

MASI

At the heart of LAC lies the MASI (Art Museum of Italian Switzerland), born from the union of the Cantonal Art Museum and the Art Museum of Lugano. Spread across three floors, it presents a constantly evolving programme of temporary exhibitions alongside fresh displays drawn from the permanent collection. The modern exhibition spaces are further enriched by those of nearby Palazzo Reali, the former headquarters of the Cantonal Art Museum. While LAC focuses primarily on Modern Art and contemporary research, Palazzo Reali showcases works spanning from the early 15th century to the first half of the 20th century, with particular attention to the artistic heritage of the region.

Olgiati Collection

Beneath the Central Park facing the cultural centre, Spazio-1 is the dedicated exhibition area for the contemporary art collection of Giancarlo and Danna Olgiati. Redesigned by LAC architect Ivano Gianola, this subterranean gallery hosts rotating exhibitions from a collection that traces the progression of international artistic movements from the early 20th century to the present, with particular focus on Futurism, Spatialism, Nouveau Realisme and Arte Povera.

Why LAC

LAC's mission is to champion diverse forms of art while maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality, engaging and inspiring the broadest possible domestic and international audience. As director Michel Gagnon has expressed: "LAC is not only a place where people come to see a performance, a concert or an exhibition, but a dynamic and vibrant cultural centre. I have a precise idea: I want to make LAC unique, a place boasting a strong national and international identity."

Spaces and architecture

Conceived as a place where different artistic disciplines converge and interact, LAC expresses its identity through its very architecture. Architect Ivano Gianola, an exponent of the renowned "Scuola Ticinese" (Ticino School of architecture) and winner of the international design competition, envisioned a complex deeply connected to the city it serves. Visitors step into a grand hall conceived as an expansive window, dissolving the boundary between inside and outside. The hall opens onto Piazza Bernardino Luini with a stunning vista over the lake, linking the cultural centre to the 16th-century complex of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli and its adjoining convent, originally built for Franciscan friars. This deliberate sense of spatial continuity between interior and exterior eliminates any feeling of separation, inviting visitors to experience LAC as part of daily life, an open door and the new beating heart of the city. From the evocative foyer, the concert hall lies in one direction, while three floors of museum exhibition space are accessed from the opposite side. The complex also features the Teatrostudio, various multi-purpose rooms, the Agora (an outdoor amphitheatre adjacent to the hall) and Spazio-1, home to the Olgiati contemporary art collection.
