For climbers who dream of warm granite under their fingertips, the scent of pine resin in the air and panoramas that stretch from Alpine summits to Mediterranean lakeshores, Ticino is nothing short of paradise. With around 70 climbing areas on granite and gneiss, this corner of Switzerland holds the record for the highest concentration of free climbing spots in the entire Alpine range. From Vallemaggia to Onsernone Valley, from Verzasca to Leventina, from the Luzzone dam in the Blenio Valley to the Denti della Vecchia above Lugano, the rock is generally excellent and well equipped. Whether you seek single-pitch sport routes, long multi-pitch adventures or the raw verticality of a dam wall, Ticino delivers in abundance. For rainy days, the Evolution Centre in Taverne offers a state-of-the-art indoor climbing experience.
The Locarno region: lake-view free climbing opportunities
The most celebrated climbing spots near Locarno are Arcegno and Balladrum, the latter perched on Monte Verita in Ascona.
Just outside Arcegno, amid chestnut woods and small ponds of naturalistic interest, you will find over 100 well-equipped single-pitch routes on wonderfully rough rock, spanning a range of grades to suit every climber. From the top of the walls, the view sweeps across lush natural surroundings, Locarno and the Maggia River delta. Please note: natural environments and biotopes in this area are protected, and climbing is permitted from spring to late autumn.
Along the forest road from Monte Verita to Ronco sopra Ascona lie the two climbing areas of Balladrum. The lower section features about ten technical routes of moderate difficulty, while the upper section offers an equal number of easier routes ideal for beginners. The view over Lake Maggiore is breathtaking. Warm and south-facing, this spot truly shines on clear winter days.
Climbing in Vallemaggia
The vast mountainous territory of Vallemaggia offers a remarkable diversity of natural rock faces. At the valley entrance in Ponte Brolla, and at Avegno, Cevio, Someo, Brontallo, Mognola (Lavizzara Valley), Bosco Gurin and Naret, climbers can test themselves on everything from accessible cliff faces to long, demanding trails.
Ponte Brolla is a classic destination for "plaisir" climbing, set within wild surroundings highlighted by the scenic gorges of the Maggia River and a magnificent panorama. Hundreds of well-equipped routes for all levels, many ideal for beginners, thread through the area. Avegno's Torbeccio area offers both easy and difficult routes, while the rock walls behind the grottos are distinguished by their length. Someo and Cevio present high-grade cliff faces for ambitious climbers, while the wild Val Calnegia (Val Bavona) beckons friction-climbing specialists with longer, more demanding routes. Above Bosco Gurin, Ticino's highest village, a magnificent Alpine basin at 2,300 metres altitude offers a wealth of breathtaking, well-equipped routes on solid, rough gneiss with a granite-like texture, featuring plates, crevices and vertical walls with notches for climbers of all levels and styles. The ideal season runs from spring to late autumn, though proximity to the Alpine crest means northerly winds can bring sudden weather changes. Just above Brontallo in the Lavizzara Valley, the sunny south-facing rock face of "El Cat" offers athletic, technical and endurance climbing on well-worn, solid gneiss across some twenty well-equipped routes. South and southwest exposure makes it ideal for winter, spring and autumn; during warmer months, the heat makes climbing inadvisable. In the same valley, an imposing white-striated wall furrowed with crevices and overhangs rises above Prato Sornico. This tough, exhilarating climbing area features more than 50 single-pitch routes of moderate to high difficulty, shaded in the morning and sunlit in the afternoon. Around Lake Mognola above Fusio, some 90 routes have been established on crags of outstanding rock. Overhangs, vertical walls and technical slab provide enjoyment for every level. Certain sectors allow climbing even on hot summer days. The crags are scattered along the path from Lake Mognola to the ancient aqueduct carved into the rock. The Naret region also boasts a number of well-equipped routes, all with an Alpine character.
Rock faces in Onsernone Valley
Above the village of Russo, the eponymous cliff offers a scenic, peaceful, sunny climbing area, pleasant even on short winter days. Around 40 pitches await, with several vertical, challenging gaping crevices to test your mettle. The plates of Paleria in Berzona present various routes featuring friction-style pitches. The lower section suits beginners, while the upper reaches are reserved for more experienced climbers.
Climbing in Verzasca Valley
Beyond its famous emerald waters, the Verzasca Valley harbours magnificent free climbing areas.
The imposing south-facing rock wall of Eus rises over 300 metres of truly outstanding, varied rock, hosting several high-level routes ranked among the finest in Ticino. An ideal destination for mid-season climbing and, in the absence of snow, even winter ascents. The southern face of Poncione d'Alnasca, both isolated and exposed, is widely considered the most beautiful wall in all of Ticino. On this grandiose 500-metre pyramid, a number of demanding routes await, suitable only for truly expert climbers.
Climbing routes in the valleys Bedretto and Leventina
Pizzo Prevat, Cristallina, St. Gotthard Pass, Piansecco, Chuebodenhorn, Poncione di Ruino and Passo di Manio: these are just some of the extraordinary climbing destinations in the region behind St. Gotthard.
In the Bedretto Valley, Poncione di Ruino and Poncione di Cassina Baggio offer varied and interesting alpine trails. The relatively high altitude, favourable positioning and diversity of itineraries mean these rock faces can be climbed in all seasons, and in winter, approach on skis opens up a number of rewarding ascents. Interesting cliffs also await near the Piansecco Hut, while Passo di Manio features over 30 well-equipped single-pitch routes of moderate to high difficulty on generally excellent rock. Pizzo Prevat in Leventina Valley is an elegant, slender rocky tower rising above the meadows of Alpe Campolungo, renowned among climbers for its graceful, harmonious profile. Its faces boast a number of beautiful alpine trails. Alpe Campolungo is easily reached via the cableway from Rodi-Fiesso to Lake Tremorgio, followed by a walk.
The Luzzone dam
This imposing concave wall stands as a monument to vertical ambition. Over 650 artificial handholds have been installed across 165 metres of sheer verticality, with five pitches of progressively increasing difficulty. It is a unique climbing experience in a setting of stunning Alpine beauty. To climb the dam, request the access keys at the restaurant adjacent to the dam.
Denti della Vecchia
Rising as a dramatic backdrop to the Gulf of Lugano, the "Denti della Vecchia" are one of Ticino's most historic climbing areas. Generations of climbers have explored the walls, cliffs and precipices of these evocative "Ticino Dolomites", which offer over 120 routes of every grade. From the summits, the views are staggering: the entire Lugano region spreads below, while the peaks of Vallemaggia, the Verzasca Valley and the Valais Alps line the horizon. The principal starting point is the Pairolo Hut, which also features a climbing wall on its outer facade with all necessary gear available on site.
