Born on the high peaks above Sonogno, the Verzasca River carves its way down through the valley that bears its name, past the fork at Corippo, and into the vast artificial lake created by the dam inaugurated in 1966. What makes it famous is the colour of its water -- an impossibly clear emerald that has graced countless photographs, book covers, magazine spreads, and calendars. Surrounded by pristine wilderness, the river becomes an irresistible destination in summer, when its calmer stretches transform into natural swimming pools and the sun-warmed rocks near Lavertezzo fill with swimmers seeking a taste of alpine paradise. It is a true jewel of wild Ticino -- and a place where respect for nature and personal safety are essential.
Visitors entering the Verzasca Valley and climbing past the imposing dam first encounter the great reservoir, which lends the upper valley an idyllic, almost fjord-like appearance when water levels are high in spring and summer. Below the dam, the artificially created lake has swallowed the river's original course through deep gorges. But at the Corippo fork, the Verzasca reappears in all its glory, flowing alongside the road in long, luminous segments. The most iconic view is at Lavertezzo, where the double-arched Ponte dei salti (Bridge of Jumps) is mirrored in pools of crystalline green.
The Sentierone
The river flows through pristine landscape, between smooth, sculpted rocks and dense forest. The long but gentle walk known as the Sentierone retraces the old path once used by peasants travelling to the plain, offering views of the river from particularly dramatic vantage points along the way.
Leisure zone
When summer heat descends, the Verzasca -- and the Lavertezzo area in particular -- becomes a beloved destination. The river's pools turn into natural open-air swimming holes, while the flat rocks lining the banks invite sunbathers to stretch out and soak up the warmth. Many are content to bask on the smooth granite; others swim or dive from the Ponte dei salti -- an activity that demands caution, experience, and good judgement.
Water sports
The crystal-clear waters and the river's lateral tributaries make the Verzasca a paradise for scuba divers, with particularly popular dive sites near Lavertezzo (tank refills available in Lavertezzo and Vogorno). The river is also well suited for canyoning and kayaking. Many divers combine their sport with underwater photography, often achieving remarkable results in the exceptional visibility.
Caution
The water is cold and demands a gradual entry. Wet pebbles and rocks can be treacherously slippery, and currents and whirlpools can quickly become dangerous. It is vital to heed information campaigns, respect safety signposts and local advice, and exercise good judgement -- so that this magnificent natural playground remains a place of joy, not of mishap.
Access to the river
Access points are marked at various locations along the valley. Since 2013, parking has been regulated through the Verzasca Parking Card, available at the tourist office, info points, kiosks, restaurants, and campsites. A daily or weekly pass grants access to 33 parking areas scattered along the Verzasca and includes a pocket map of the valley with tourist information.
