Sunlight dances on the surface of Lake Lugano, the scent of wild rosemary drifts through the warm air, and the trail ahead curves gently between ancient olive groves and Mediterranean shrubs toward one of Ticino's most enchanting lakeside villages. The Sentiero di Gandria is the quintessential Lugano walk: a serene, scenic path that skirts the shore with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains at every step, culminating in the postcard-perfect hamlet of Gandria, where stone houses tumble down to the water's edge.
Itinerary: Gandria Trail (1.5h, see map)
The trail begins at the San Domenico parking area in Castagnola, easily reached by car or, better still, by public transport from Lugano. Shortly after passing beneath the picturesque arch that marks the start, you choose your path: continue along the main lakeside route to Gandria, or take the detour uphill to the "Parco degli ulivi" (olive park), which loops back to the shore trail further ahead.
The expansive Parco degli ulivi covers roughly 20,000 square metres on the slopes of Monte Bre. Its southern exposure and sheltered position create a microclimate mild enough for olive trees, cypresses, myrtles, and laurel oaks to thrive even in winter. Come spring, the terraces explode with multi-coloured blooms. Stairways and winding paths climb through steep terrain to beautiful terraced viewpoints overlooking the lake and mountains, with Monte San Salvatore prominent in the distance. Educational panels in four languages explore the history, botany, cultivation, and lore of the olive tree.
Descending from the park, you rejoin the spectacular lakeside promenade. The final stretch offers splendid views across Lake Lugano and its mountain amphitheatre before you arrive in Gandria, a village that seems to float on the water. Houses large and small lean against one another along steep alleys and stairways, hiding tiny terraced gardens, weathered frescoes, and quiet corners that reward unhurried exploration. Reminders of the olive tree's historic importance abound: the imposing ulivo del Carlin beside the small port, and the old grindstone once used to press olive oil, standing next to the City Hall.
