What if you could stroll through all of Switzerland in a single hour? At Swissminiatur in Melide, just minutes from Lugano, that whimsical dream comes true. Spread across 14,000 square metres of blossoming parkland -- with over 1,500 plants framing the paths -- this open-air wonderland presents the nation's most celebrated landmarks in exquisite 1:25 scale: castles, cathedrals, historic squares, traditional chalets, soaring mountains and shimmering lakes, all painstakingly recreated in miniature detail.
The visit
Step into a mesmerising pocket-sized Switzerland and feel the fascination of an entire country at your fingertips. A network of 3,560 metres of miniature railway winds through the park, with 18 tiny trains rattling along the tracks. Watch boats glide across glistening lakes, cable cars and funiculars ascend and descend the peaks, cars zip along scaled-down motorways, and planes taxi into position at a miniature Zurich airport.
Among the 129 models on display, you will recognise faithfully reproduced icons such as Rapperswil Castle, the Chillon Castle, the Bellinzona Castles, the Parliament Building of Bern and Locarno's Piazza Grande -- each rendered with astonishing precision in the rare 1:25 scale.
Every year, visitors from around the world flock to this park on the banks of Lake Ceresio, easily reachable from Lugano by boat or train. The surrounding panorama only heightens the magic: Monte Generoso, San Salvatore and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Monte San Giorgio form a dramatic alpine backdrop that no scale model could rival.
"Ours is a family business," explains Director Joel Vuigner. "It was the idea of my grandfather, inspired by Madurodam, a similar park in Holland. To choose the location he travelled all over Switzerland in search of the perfect spot. In the end, Melide won out, thanks in large part to this extraordinary landscape between lake and mountains. At the beginning, in 1959, there were just 10-12 models and the visitors were mostly Italian tourists coming to Switzerland to shop. Little by little the collection grew, and by the 1980s there were already around 100 models. Today we have 129 miniatures, a dense railway network, lakes, bridges, motorways, cable cars and funiculars -- all precision handwork, faithful to the originals and crafted with great passion in the Swissminiatur laboratories."
